Nurse With Wound

Gender: Male
Country: United Kingdom
Description: An English group of irregular personnel, exploring a large number of styli- stic areas of industrial music. It was started in 1978 by Steven STAPLETON (b. 1957), a painter and composer also known under the BABS SANTINI moniker, the mastermind and sole core member of the group, the owner of the UNITED DAIRIES record label, a long-time studio and live contribu- tor to CURRENT 93 and, briefly, WHITEHOUSE, as well as to a plethora of other artists of diverse artistic provenance. Until 1981 the other members were John FOTHERGILL and Heeman PATHAK, and following their depar- ture he operated it as a solo project, with other artists invited to assist him whenever needed. These included his wife Diana ROGERSON, FOETUS, Rose McDOWALL, and John BALANCE, and recently his regular collaborators within it have been Andrew LILES, Colin POTTER, and Matthew WALDRON. The early works shared aesthetics with the industrial avant-garde of rock music, evincing at the same time the group’s fascination with avant- garde art movements of the 20th century, sexual perversions, disintegration of personality, and madness. What earned the project both renown and acclaim were its subsequent works that skilfully fused a variety of means of sonic expression, particularly those of krautrock psychedelia, the acade- mic avant-garde of electronic music, experimental post-industrial, mini- mal ends of ambient music, and even folk and ethnic music. The releases were conceptual works consisting either of elaborate electroacoustic suites or short segued pieces of unexpected arrangements and varied dynamics, exploring themes such as the grotesquery of dreams, surrealist sexuality, and an irrational reality, heavily deconstructed both notionally and aesthe- tically. The composing conventions and techniques employed are diverse, the main one relying on collage methods involving meticulously selected field recordings, processed human voice, selected acoustic instruments, and synthetically generated anti-musical electronic static. The catalogue also includes compositions based on lengthy extracts from somebody else’s works, e.g. Brained By Falling Masonry, a faithful adaption of Cottonwoodhill, a legendary track by a krautrock group BRAINTICKET.
