Cosey Fanni Tutti

Alias:
Gender: Female
Country: United Kingdom
Description:
The stage name of Christine Carol NEWBY (b. 1951), an English composer, performance artist, painter and pornography actress, refers to the title of an opera by Wolfgang A. MOZART (Cosi Fan Tutte). She debuted in 1969 alongside Genesis P-ORRIDGE in a performance art group COUM TRANSMISSIONS, where, having originally started as a costume and set designer, she moved on to become a co-leader and major performer in 1971. A member of THROBBING GRISTLE from 1975 to 1981, following the group’s disbanding she formed with her husband Chris CARTER a duo called CHRIS & COSEY, where they explored trance rhythm areas of experimental music, often bordering on the aesthetics of popular dance music. Since the early 1980s she has also performed in solo projects, usually para-theatrical shows, involving erotic striptease with elements of ambient music, modern dance and body art. Her biggest artistic success was the Time To Tell album, originally released in 1982 on a cassette included with the FLOWMOTION magazine. Another moniker she has also employed is CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE (CTI). Since 2004 she and her husband have organised numerous multimedia perfor- mances as CARTER TUTTI. The ideology behind her art revolves around notions of human sexuality, their relation to social norms and psychophy- sical limitations. In her works one can discern a reflection on the fragility of human existence, intimate reckoning with the past and attempts at confrontation with the approaching death.
